Who Will Pay For Your Funeral If You Die?
This is a serious question but one most of us do not discuss. For some it is a taboo topic, insulting. For others, not something that crosses their mind. For me, it is something I think and stress and wonder about but haven’t researched. It is one of those things that I think about late at night, when I’m trying to fall asleep but a million thoughts are in my head. But, thinking of something and actually discussing it or implementing it is two entirely different things. Something I need to get on top of and figure out. As a single mom I need to make sure my kids are not left in debt if I die, especially since they are both minors. I’m not planning to die anytime soon, believe me, I want to see them go to college and go forth in the world and flourish. But planning for the unexpected is important. We have car insurance and health insurance. Why do some look over life insurance?
How Expensive Is My Death?
If I passed away right now there will be more costs than just a funeral. My income will cease to exist. Things that my kids take for granted, like the bills I pay, their free education, me being their taxi-mom, paying for their sports, music lessons, etc. Plus smaller expenses, like utilities, our pets, groceries, etc. All of that will no longer be funded by my income. I’ll be leaving them my house (not paid off) and new car (not paid off either) but they wouldn’t have the income to pay for either.

With life insurance, I can plan ahead and take care of expenses for them. I can set up a college fund for both of them. A four-year student entering a public college will pay an average of $34,788 in 2020 per year. (source). I can pay off my mortgage so they can still keep the house, or live here, without being forced to sell it. I can pay for my funeral service and burial plot.
I can plan all of this for many different types of unforeseen deaths. Cancer, auto accidents, unexpected health complications, etc. According to Medical News Today, over 727,000 people pass away each year from cancer or accidental causes in the U.S.
Who Should Have Life Insurance?
If you are a single mom, stay-at-home mom, work-at-home mom, or some other mix, it is important to have life insurance. Many work places offer life insurance policies but they policy face value is very little. For those that have life insurance and have a spouse die, many said they wished they had had more coverage. Life insurance, by Jenny Life, is something easy to sign up for and it can be done online. I love how I can take care of my kids beyond the grave and not have to worry about who will pay for my funeral.

It’s so scary to think about but so necessary. After losing my grandmother and finding out she had not made any arrangements and didn’t have any life insurance I swore to get it all taken care of for my kids and did it right after we finished up with my grandmother’s service. I didn’t want them to have that burden.

I was JUST talking about this with my visiting sister, her wife, and my Mom today actually! My sister has no life insurance and Mom has little…. as in…. I am not sure it would cover her funeral even. It has me worried. I explained that we have life insurance on me and on the kids even. After seeing tragically how costly just dying is….. everyone NEEDS life insurance. It really isn’t that costly and so worth it!

After my parents passed I decided I need to get life insurance so my adult children with young families wouldn’t have to bare my after death expenses. Here it is two years later (that is longer than it seems) and I still have not decided the where, how much etc Time to complete this.
