Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) should not be something that is overlooked amongst adults and teens alike. I was diagnosed with ADHD when I was young. ADHD is a chronic condition which includes symptoms of inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity; however, it mostly affected my concentration making me inattentive. Now I am the mother of two teenagers who also have been diagnosed with ADHD, except it looks different in each of them. There is definitely inattention and hyperactivity but with my daughter, she works with it. It is a part of herself and her personality. With my son, he was having challenges at school and could never sit still or stay in one place. As a mom it isn’t always easy to navigate.  I have a hard time putting myself in my son’s shoes.  He does things that drive me up the wall and I can’t always relate to his reasoning.  I have found talking to him about things help.  Reading up on ADHD helps.  Counseling helps too.  As he ages things change and childhood ADHD has become teen ADHD.  The paths aren’t always easy.

Finding the right way to manage ADHD isn’t always easy. Make sure you keep track of symptoms and keep in constant contact with your or your teenager’s doctor. Medication isn’t right for everyone.  It depends on the type of ADHD (YES, there are different types, that is something I learned recently) and if there are other issues, like ODD (Oppositional Defiance Disorder) or if the ADHD is interfering with a child’s educational progress.

The struggles aren’t easy.  They ADHD hasn’t gone away as my son aged.  Some people outgrow it but that isn’t an issue with our family.  I have the feeling my son will have adult ADHD and it will be something he always has but we can navigate it together.
