Older Age Have You Squinting At The Pages?
Getting old can mean a lot of things. Freedom to do more things, have more leisure time, be able to sit and read more (I love reading on my back porch in the hammock) and appreciating life more. But there is an opposite to aging too. Gray hairs, more aches and pains and squinting when I want to read something. Especially if the font is small and if the background isn’t white. Pill bottles are the worst. Here are a few tips to help you see better without having to go to the eye doctor and get prescription glasses (but please get them if you need them). Sometimes a little extra help is all we need in able to read better. Personally, I wear contact lens for my nearsightedness but they cause me to not be able to read labels as well. According to my optometrist I’m not at the point of needing prescription reading glasses. He said it is a part of aging and tired eyes. In the meanwhile here are a few ideas that work for me.
1- Get good lighting. I have found having significant backlight helps me be able to read better. My hallway is dark so if I’m trying to read a pill bottle from my medicine cabinet it helps to turn on the hall light or go in the bathroom.
2-Make sure you are giving your eyes a break. If you are staring at a computer screen all day than your eyes might be tired and strained. Make sure to give yourself a break. Every ten minutes at the screen, stare away for 10 seconds. Also move around every hour or so. Get up, stretch, look around and let your eyes focus on something far away. If you have a very bright monitor you can put an eye strain protector screen on it too.
3- Get some cheat glasses. Readers are a great way to give your eyes a little help. You can get them from Readers.com in all sorts of colors, styles, sizes and power. I am loving these nondescript black ones called Firefly in 3.0 power. They are great for reading small print. I also love the shape of the frames and how well they fit.
4- Get books, prescriptions and other papers that are normally smaller print in a larger font. You can find them at a bookstore/library. You can ask your pharmacist for a larger print. You can even change the font size on your cell phone or computer. That way things that are normally fine print are now a decent size to read.
