How to Overcome Just About Anything
Everyday we live our lives we face struggle and adversity. Everybody’s issues are different, but we all have trials and tribulations. The way we go about resolving our issues is what matters.
I got an email the other day from a young man who started an apparel and accessories company to provide a solution for dealing with the everyday rigors of life. He started a company, I Can Be Society, that was born out of tragedy, but thankfully has a happy ending.
When Michael Price was 17 years old he got a phone call from his father. He told him that he had just been diagnosed with ALS – a terminal illness that cripples the central nervous system of its victims leaving them in a permanent state of paralysis, ultimately ending in an untimely death. Michael was devastated. The issue was particularly traumatic because his parents had just gotten divorced a year prior and Michael and his father weren’t on speaking terms.
“When I got the call from my dad, I shut down. I didn’t know what to think. I didn’t know what to say. I broke down crying and I realized suddenly that life truly is short. That day I made a vow to live every day of my life to the fullest and to spend this one limited life I had being of service to other people.”
When Michael was 18, he was bitten by the entrepreneurship bug. From 18 – 27 he had a series of major life achievements. He started many successful businesses and published his first book: What Next? The Millennials Guide to Surviving and Thriving in the Real World – endorsed by Barbara Corcoran, Star of ABC’s Shark Tank.
“Despite the success I had at an early age, I didn’t feel fulfilled. I felt like my accomplishments only left a positive impact on my life, but what about other people?”
In 2014, Michael launched I Can Be Society as a community of like-minded people that shared their stories of tragedy and triumph as a means of helping other people in similar circumstances. After 6 months it became clear that in order for I Can Be Society to have a longer lasting impact in people’s lives, Michael had to build a deeper connection with his site visitors.
He started by designing and selling a motivational wristband. It was simple and applicable to anybody in any situation. It read, “I Can Be” with a red blank for the person to fill in.
“After I made my first run of wristbands, I gave them all away for free to my fans on Facebook. I couldn’t believe the response I got. People sent me Facebook messages about how my wristband was helping them get over drug and alcohol abuse; overcome racial discrimination; and stay strong on the battlefield while at war in the Middle East. This is when I knew I was on to something.”

“Taking the I Can Be Society Challenge!!! Got my wristband in today! I chose to fill in my blank with Free From Addiction! I Can Be Free From Addiction!!! I am 3 months clean and sober from drugs and alcohol!” – Haley B.
Over the course of the next couple of years, Michael expanded his product line to include motivational silicone wristbands, graphic tees for men, shirts for women, hats for men, accent pillows, iPhone cases, inspirational posters and coffee mugs.
“I knew that if I wanted to really make a big impact in people’s lives, a wristband wasn’t enough. I sought to create an environment for people that immersed them in positivity. Imagine waking up in the morning with a motivational wristband on that encourages you to keep going along with a motivational poster on the wall that reminded you not to mistake a bad day for a bad life.”
The environment Michael speaks of is backed by a psychological principle known as The Power of Suggestion, which states that what we train our brain to believe based on our surroundings will influence our behavior. With this kind of power, you can overcome just about anything!
