Homemade Bread Recipe
It has been year since I’ve made homemade bread. I used to have a bread maker and I’d dump all the ingredients in and it’d do everything. It isn’t that making bread is that hard, but it does take a little bit of time. Lately I’ve been thinking about making bread. But my bread maker broke, ages ago, and so I had to figure out how to do it the old fashioned way.
It took a little bit of trial and error. The first time I forget to test the yeast. This is something that should always be done. Truthfully, I bought the yeast only one day before. So it should have worked. I tested the rest of the package set (each one came with three) and the other two weren’t active. I happen to have bought two sets. So I tested one from the other package and it worked fine. Yippie! I did the recipe again, same as the first time, and it worked well. We had fresh homemade bread.
To test yeast it just adds a few minutes to the recipe, but it makes the difference of having a flat bread or fresh poofy bread. Simply add the yeast (you can use a package or a scoop from a jar) to some warm water and add 1 teaspoon of sugar. Mix. Wait 5-10 minutes. The yeast should bubble and have frothiness to it on top. It is worth it to always do this.
This is my first attempt… see how flat the bread was. It tasted okay but wasn’t what I was trying to make. More like an unleaven bread.
Second attempt, I tested the yeast, made the bread and had some amazing fresh bread! This was so easy. Not sure why it took me so long to get back into baking bread. Perfect for sandwiches, dinner, or how my kids like it, to just add some spread to warm bread, spread and eat it. I did learn from a friend that the bread cuts better if slant at an angle and cut it with a serrated knife while it is warm and it will slice better (I’m taking notes- so the more I make the better I get).
I was able to buy the Land ‘O Lakes Soft Squeeze Spread at Ralphs. The kids love it because it is easy to use. I love it because there is no mess.
I let the kids help cut it and spread a little spread on it and eat it still warm. I love this squeezable soft spread by Land ‘O Lakes. It was easy and quick (they loved this so the could eat the bread quicker).
I made two regular loaves and one mini-loaf with the recipe (you can print it below).
These are the bread pans I used (the only ones I have). You can use a traditional size (one on left) to have more uniform bread size and shape.
Next plan- to make more (all this was gone in two days) and make some for the holidays. I’m hoping everyone else loves it as much as my family has.
