6 Tips for Getting Your House Ready For Winter
Have you started getting your house ready for winter? September is upon is. Winter is just around the corner. That means colder weather, rain, winds and more. In California we have quiet mild winters but we still bundle up some and there is some prep work to be done before winter is here. Not only is planning ahead a good idea, so you aren’t caught by surprise, but also so you can save yourself money.
1- Get your yard ready. For me that means removing my summer plants (that are now dying), adding any nutrients to the soil that is needed and shopping for seeds for winter vegetables. I have three raised vegetable planters my dad built for me a few years ago so now I have even more room to plant product. Some things I’ll be planting: lettuce, broccoli, carrots and cauliflower. This is also the time to prune my fruit trees and my rose bushes. I got some awesome pruners from Fiskars. Both small hand pruners (ideal for rose bushes and small pruning) and some nippers, good for bigger things, like tree branches.
Birds also need extra food at this time so I will keep my hummingbird feeder full and the feeder I have for bird seed filled too. If you are in freezing climates you might want to put out fresh water for birds to drink. I love this bird feeder from Precious Moments (in celebration of their 40th anniversary). It is pretty even when it is empty. The height is great too so someone sees it easily and doesn’t trip on it and hopefully the cats will leave it alone. They are having sales celebrating their anniversary too!
2- Make sure your roof is in good condition. If not, call a roofer now. If you have a heavy storm and have rain water leaking into your house, chances are a lot of other people are too. Roofers will be backed up and you might have to wait a while. Better to get everything looked at ahead of time.

4- Make sure your bedroom will be warm enough when you are sleeping but not too hot. I refuse to run my heater at night. My kids used to get croup all the time when they were young. I stopped running the heater when they were sleeping and they never got it since. Can’t say this works for everyone, but helped my kids. We also will wake up all stuffy and congested if the heater is on. Instead we bundle up. If our bedding is worn this is the perfect time to replace it.
