Frugal Parents- Pay Attention!
This book is written by a VERY frugal person. Dannelle Gay has a blog, Operation 40K. She writes about saving $40 thousand (yes $40,000) a year by being frugal and spending less and was able to save money for her family. She has now taken the tips and tricks she has written about on her blog and created them into a book. 101 Ways To Save Money Painlessly. There is something in here for everyone. The best tip that applies to me is to keep better track of eating out and food expenses. That seems to dig the deepest in my pocketbook. Currently I’m spending about $600-800 a month at the grocery store (for a family of three) and I want to try to get better at sales and coupons and cut that expense in 1/2. By paying more attention to how much I spend eating out makes me more aware of the spending, instead of just paying with my credit card and not adding up all my dining expenses for the month. Now that I have started doing this it is crazy how much I spend. I could take the kids on more vacations or use that money for a car payment instead of a 1 hour meal.
This books says 101 ways but I think as a person starts doing some they branch out and find more and more ways to be frugal and save money. A lot of these tips and tricks are already familiar to me but some I have not used(and should) like making homemade cleaners and detergent (next on my to-do list). I like that the book is written in easy-to-read language and all of these ideas are tangible savings ideas for everyone.
Retirement is a time period you probably want to enjoy. However, it can be difficult to do so if your funds are limited. One way to increase those funds is to apply for a certain type of loan by visiting a reverse mortgage lender. The reason it is considered to be a reverse loan is that it is a loan that will provide you with ongoing income, rather than you having to pay it back on an ongoing basis. A reverse mortgage calculator will help you determine the size of the monthly payments you can expect. However, line of credit and lump sum withdrawal options also exist. In any of those cases the loan balance will not be due as long as you use the home as your primary place of residence. However, you will still be responsible for paying other bills relating to ownership and maintenance of the home, such as taxes.

Can’t wait to see if there is a second or third book to come out by Ms. Gay and all of her ways of saving money. I’ve been thinking a lot lately about retirement being about 20 years away (far, but will happen in a blink of an eye) and how I need to save more today, every day, so that I have more saved for when I retire. Definitely worth getting the book, even if you think you are saving money. There is always more to learn.
