Antelope Valley Poppy Reserve & Poppy Festival
I’ve gone to the poppy reserve a few times and it was amazing to see mountains and valleys full or orange and purple (poppies and Lupins). My mom’s birthday is in April so some years we’d make it a family trip to go for her birthday. We had fun exploring the paths and just strolling around while taking pictures. This year we went and there were no poppies. At all. They said there were some and a frost in December killed all of them. We saw only one single plant, near the visitor center. Everything else was weeds or other random plants.
If you were planning on driving up this year to the Poppy Reserve, don’t go. Unless it is just for a nice windy hike with bugs.
The poppy reserve is open sunrise to sundown seven days a week. There is a hotline to call to see if there a lot of flowers in bloom! Poppy Reserve Wildflower Hotline (661) 724-1180
Like any Last Minute Holidays you should always plan ahead. Find other nearby attractions you might want to also visit. Explore the area and enjoy the day.
No Poppies At All- this was the view from the Poppy Reserve this year.
Mountains and mountains of weeds. No poppies, no Lupin, nothing. I wish they would have told us before collecting $10 for parking! We would have turned around.
A small field of Poppies Near Ripley Dessert Woodland. (7.5 miles west of the Poppy Reserve). California Poppies
We also stopped at some fields near Lake Hughes. There was a decent amount of poppies and Lupin growing. It was almost dusk so the poppy flowers were starting to close but we got in a few good pictures. There was also a lot of ladybugs on the Lupin.
