4 Ways To Choose The Best Breast Pump
If you are pregnant or just had a baby and are trying to decide on the best breast pump to meet your needs and style that here are some tips to help you out. Choosing the right one will definitely depend on if you work, work from home, will have a sitter sometimes, overnights away, are going to exclusively breastfeed, or are a stay-at-home parent. You have options from hand expressing, a manual pump with one or two sides and an electric pump with one or two sides. You don’t need to spend a ton on a pump you’ll barely use and on the other hand, you don’t want a cheap pump if you need one a few times a day.
Breast vs Bottle
I am a firm believer that ‘breast is best.’ Meaning not only breast feeding (closeness, time with baby, bonding) but the breast milk too. But in today’s world with two parents working, single moms and breast feeding attachment issues that isn’t always possible. So, pumping and giving a baby bottle breast milk is a good second choice. FYI- third would be donor milk and fourth would be formula. I love that breastfeeding is on the ‘upward trending cycle’ and more moms are doing it. If you can’t, please try to pump and give your baby breast milk. Even if it is only 3 months or 1 month. Your baby will be getting your immune system, the most nutritious food and so much more that can’t be replicated as an equal in a lab. If you want to try and are having a hard time find a lactation consultant to a local La Leche League group. If you can’t, than you are an awesome mom and don’t let this define you. So many moms judge others by what they do/don’t do instead of understanding our differences.
If you are new at pumping don’t stress on how much you get out (remember if you were breastfeeding you’d measure by wet diapers, not by ozs). Try to relax, have baby near or a picture of the baby, play relaxing music, have clothing that smells like the baby. These things will help with your letdown and help you get more milk.
Which Breast Pump Should You Choose?
1- Working full-time or gone from home a lot, or bottle feeding breastmilk. If you will be pumping often, every few hours, 5 days a week, you want a good pump. If you have a newborn the hospital will sometimes rent pumps. A ‘hospital grade pump’ is phonomonial. You won’t find one better. If that isn’t an option then get one that is electric and will pump both sides at the same time with a decent size storage bottle. You want it to plug into an outlet. A battery pack one won’t be good enough and you will go through batteries too fast. I like the Gland Electronics Electric Breast Pump (modelL10).
2- If you will be using a breast pump on occasion, like date night, when you are engorged or to have some breast milk stored in the freezer than you can get a cheaper pump. Having one that pumps one side at a time is fine since you don’t need to worry about time. If you are doing it to stock up on breast milk it is best to do it first thing in the morning. This is when you will have the most milk. Do it an hour before your baby normally wakes up to nurse or nurse your baby and then pump afterwards. I also had to pump every time my son got shots since he’d have a fever and sleep a lot more. I stored all this in the freezer too (in the back, away from the temperature changes).

3-If you want a breast pump as a ‘just in case’ but don’t plan to use it than a manual breast pump will work fine. It is a little more work but a lot cheaper. I’ve seen them as low as $13 on Amazon. Do not get this if you will be pumping daily or tend to get encouraged. They are tedious and slow but they are good to have for an emergency.
4- Manual expression. If you don’t think you’ll ever be pumping or leaving the baby than you can always manually express your breast milk (I used to into a cup or bowl when I made my son rice cereal or was engorged). This isn’t as easy to learn but is something that can work well. Sorta like learning to milk a cow or goat, not kidding. The breast is a different shape but it is still a top-to-bottom gently milking squeeze. You might own a pump and do this on occasion because you don’t want to get the pump out, plug it all in and set it up.
Each time after you pump make sure you clean the bottles and all the parts that have breast milk in them. Follow the instructions for your breast pump for the best way to do this.
If you are planning on storing breast milk research the right bags for best storage, especially if you are planning on storing long-term. I like freezing in ice cube trays and then putting in freezer breast milk bags. That way I have the breast milk in small sizes (easier to defrost and to use when adding to solid foods). Breast milk does last longer than formula in the fridge and freezer but doesn’t not have indefinite lifespan. So it is important to date the bags too.
FYI- Do not share a breast pump! Breastmilk is bodily fluids. The only way you can reuse someone else’s breast pump is if you replace all the bottles, attachments and hoses. Otherwise, buy a new one.
If you are pregnant that find the breast pump that works best for you and add it to your baby registry or purchase it ahead of time. Get it cleaned and assembled and read the instructions before you have the baby so that you aren’t struggling with setting it up after the birth.
