Teen Bedroom Makeover For Under $100
My daughter wanted to redo her room a total teen bedroom makeover. It was cramped, the color was for someone of a younger age and it had been a few years since we did anything. So, being a single parent and frugal, I did all I could to get her room done, in the cheapest way possible without sacrificing quality. We both recognised that a quality memory foam mattress would be the hero of the new room look and feel, and then set about finding affordable and flawless features to complement the rest of the space.
She wanted all-white walls but my dad suggested a two-tone color with chair rails to separate the colors and she liked that idea. I hate the color yellow but she likes it, so she chose yellow on top and gray on the bottom. We changed out her bed (she had a queen bed that was my old bed and it took up too much room) for a twin bed and received the mattress from Nectar. The paint we wanted as a good quality so it would cover the old color and would last, so we used Dunn Edward paints.
I was told when painting a children’s room to pick out a color they’d still like in four years. That way they don’t outgrow the color too fast. When she was a kid, the purple was great. Now that she’s almost 16, it is too much and she wanted a more mature room.
We emptied the room except the really big furniture (that was covered) patched all the holes in the walls, sanded them down, wiped them with a damp cloth. We used blue painters tape to mark off the window frame, ceiling and other parts we didn’t want to get paint on. My dad installed the chair rail molding.
Then we painted the room with primer. If we were going light to dark or from one similar to another similar color we might not have needed this. But we were going from a purple room to a yellow/gray room. So it definitely needed it. My kids, dad and sister helped. This saved us money on labor. It did take longer, since we aren’t pros, but we got it completed in one weekend.
The whole Idea Started With Her Wanting A New Bed
What started as the idea of her getting a new bed became a bedroom makeover. Instead of replacing the bed we decided more should be done.
We decided we weren’t going to be stupid and paint the whole closet (like it was when it was painted purple) so it was painted a light gray after it was primered.
So now we have the paint supplies, two 1- gallon cans of paint (yellow and gray), white paint (chair rail molding) and gray paint (closet). Each can of gallon paint was $25. The quart size (white and gray) were given to us for free from the paint company (I also bought a few more gallons for and painted my bathroom, entry way and hallway after we were done with this job). The chair rail molding was $40.
The mattress arrived in the mail by Nectar. It came in a box and then in a protective bag. Right now they are on sale for Memorial Day for $125 off + 2 FREE pillows.

Since the room was empty of big furniture (we gave the queen bed away to someone on Freecycle) Kaela slept the first night on her new mattress and pillows on the floor (after she put a sheet and pillow cases on them). She loves the new mattress and this was her first time owning a brand new bed!
Repainting A Room With Family
I did get a quote for this from a painter before we did it. I was a $400, plus supplies. Not something I could afford.
There was some fighting, people getting in each other’s way, etc. The room was crowded and we were trying to get a coat of paint on so that it had time to dry. We did the top first, in the yellow and then the bottom in gray. We then let them dry overnight and did second coats. After those were 100% dry we did the chair rail molding. We didn’t want to put the painter’s tape on the yellow or gray part to paint the chair rail molding until everything was 100% dry or the painter’s tape might peel off the other paint. We replaced her bedroom curtains recently (taken down for the photo). But if we hadn’t those would be replace with new ones too.
This was coming along nicely. I was really hoping the yellow would fade (it did). We used kitchen chairs to stand on to get the top of the walls. We sat on the ground to get the lower half of the walls in gray. Even my nephew helped a little bit. It was definitely a team effort.
Getting there. After everything dried we removed the painter’s tape, did some touch ups, put the lightswitch covers back on and then put all the furniture back. The carpet is old and needs to be replaced, but I don’t have the money for that right now. Finished walls, including the closet. The yellow and gray look fantastic together and she has received a lot of compliments on the room. She already had a white comforter but adding some gray throw pillows and a gray throw blanket to the bed tied it in to the walls nicely.
Final cost was the bed. The mattress is from Nectar. We got the bed frame on the Facebook Marketplace for $15. Total score! It is the type that doesn’t need a box spring, so we saved money not needing to purchase one. The frame was the headboard, footboard, the rails on both sides and wood slats across the bottom. It was easy to put together in about 10 minutes.
A week after she got this bed my best friend offered her a captain’s bed because she is moving out of state. So we switched the bed again and the new one has three very deep/wide drawers underneath so we made more room in the bedroom by getting rid of the dresser and putting a cute chair in the corner. The Nectar mattress works with the new bed just the same.
All together I spent less than $100 (since my dad spent the money on the chair rail molding and the mattress was free from Nectar). Not everyone can remodel and get these two benefits but Nectar does have a sale right now on the mattress, saving $125 and getting two pillows for free.
You can also click here to enter to win a mattress by Nectar (winner gets to choose twin, queen or king size mattress).

My best frugal tip for redecorating your bedroom is to buy (or get free stuff that people want to throw out anyway, then you save even more money!) used furniture and refurbish it!

Paint for me is always the most frugal and quick way to update a bedroom. Add in some complementary curtains and you’re 90% done. A fabric headboard (homemade) is another cheap way to improve the look.

We went to dollar tree. That is my biggest tip. We saved lots of money and she got to use her imagination in the biggest way. We searched for helpful tips on the internet made a list and shopped Dollar Tree’s diy isle. She made floral designs and got paint. You know they have everything there.

My frugal tip is to go shopping in your own home. Find some things from other rooms that you can change out to give that room an updated look and feel.

My frugal bedroom makeover tip is to check with family because they usually have things they arent using that they are happy to get rid of. You may even have things that you arent using elsewhere that you can use to do you makeover!

We’ve discovered the wonders of Offerup! At least in my area, it’s been better than Craigslist with a lot more options for cheaper. We’re currently getting household items secondhand this way, so that would be my frugal tip!

This is so cute, love it. We try to find old things that people no longer want, fix them up with some paint or repairs if needed and make them our own.
