Kitten Season Is Here
You might have a pregnant cat on accident, decided to let her get pregnant on purpose or you adopted a cat, took it home and a few weeks later discovered she was pregnant. Maybe you foster cats and kittens for your local shelter. Either way, kitten season is here. Each year, when the weather warms up, litters of kittens are born. Kitten season in California seems to run from April until about November, since we have such warm weather. Right now, in our house, we have four rescue cats. A bit crazy, but we took them in, got them fixed immediately and love them all. If you have kittens on the way in your house here are some tips for must-haves before all the kittens arrive.
With April Showers Come May Meowers!
- Be prepared. Make a safe place for the momma cat to have her babies. Keep her indoors. You don’t want her having them in a hard to access location.
- Make sure you need any supplies needed. If you are fostering cats you might have a litter of kittens dropped off without a mom. You’ll need to bottle feed them every few hours and learn how to care for them. Make sure you have neonate care training if you are taking care of a litter without the mom.
- If you have multiple cats keep the mom and babies away from the other cats.
- Make sure you have enough litter boxes for all the cats in your house (not including the babies until they are old enough to litter-box-train.
- I love the Robot Litter Box. It is clean enough to keep in the house, is self-cleaning and is environmental-friendly. An app on your phone will tell you when it is full can work if you have multiple litter boxes.
- General rule of thumb is to have one litter box for each cat you own. If you are putting a litter box in a new room, changing it or changing the litter give your cat(s) time to get used to it.

Thanks for promoting spay/neuter! It’s so important! I once lived in an apartment where there were -I kid you not-around 10 cats and kittens hanging out by the dumpster. Broke my heart!
