Four Tips On How to Survive Baby Shower Gift Giving On A Budget
If you are at that age where all your friends… or like me, your friend’s kids are having babies than you’ll want some ideas on how to get great gifts for others for their baby shower while not breaking the bank! Sometimes they seem to happen in spurts, like you have three baby showers to attend in one month. Here are a few ideas on how to not hurt your pocketbook. Yet make the gift memorable and useful.
- Plan ahead. If you know some people are trying than keep an eye out of baby items on sale. Also, if you see things on sale (and have the money to spend) buy them and tuck them away. I do this for holidays and birthdays too.
- Keep it simple. Don’t stress on high valued cards, wrapping paper or tissue paper. A simple white gift bag and homemade card will work.
- Go in on a gift with others. If you want a high-end gift that will last (and is needed) then get 3-4 people to help out. Everyone can pitch in money for the gift to reduce the individual cost.
- Skip newborn clothing. A lot of people will gift newborn clothes. Most people, especially if it is their first shower, will have their baby outgrow outfits before they are even worn once. Plan ahead and gift clothing for 12-months and older. Keep in mind that babies often wear clothing sizes 1-2 sizes bigger (unless they are premies). Pay attention to the season and what the weather will be when the baby is 9 months old.

When my oldest was born someone made me a ‘breastfeeding basket’ full of things to have in arm’s reach while I was nursing. A bottle of water, some trail mix, a good book. Add what you think would be a good idea. When my second was born I created a ‘snack basket’ for my toddler. That way if I was breastfeeding the baby or trying to get her to sleep and he said he was hungry he was allowed to go to the snack basket. I’ve gifted these baskets to several friends when I go to visit after the baby is born, and they love it.
Another great idea, if you are really strapped for money, is volunteer to help clean the house or do a meal delivery service after the baby is born. It takes some effort to coordinate both but are low in cost.
