This awesome blog post is sponsored by Mirum. Depending on where you are from your Christmas traditions might be different. Most families in the U.S. that celebrate Christmas have some things most do. Have a tree. Put up stockings. Open presents on Christmas morning. But there are a few that might differ per family, most depending on culture. Some might be crazy, made up ones that are generations old and no one remembers why they are done. Here are some we do and some I’ve recently learned about. I would love to learn more too.
Our first pre-Christmas tradition is church. We go during the year too but the Christmas service is the ‘get dressed up’ one. We invite friends too.
We also love getting our Christmas spirit with Ugly Sweaters… the crazier the better. Here are two I found at Walmart. Purchased the one on the left. I’ll be decorating it too. I got some Slim Jim Sticks at Walmart too. I like to give my kids a nice assortment of snacks, chocolates, mini-presents, small useful things and random crazy things. The Slim Jim fall under practical and useful. The kids love them plus I can put them into their lunches. Filling up the cart with Stocking Stuffers. Slim Jim Sticks, Palmer Chocolate plus found some other great things that I hid away. Happy with the selection and great prices at Walmart! Now to get home and lock myself in my room to stuff the stockings.
What traditions are in YOUR family?
Do you have ‘the Christmas pickle?’ Some families have an ornament that is a pickle. They put it on the tree when they decorate and on Christmas eve, after the kids are asleep, the parents move it (hiding it sorta). On Christmas morning the first kid that spots it gets to open the first present.
What about an orange in the toe of the stocking? Do you also have an apple?
Brazilian nuts.
In my family the kids get fuzzy socks, small things (like mints, chapstick) and a new electric toothbrush.
We also do something like a fun old toys. Slinky (toy I remember from when I was a kid).
Movie tickets.
Candy & Chocolates (we got Chocolate from Palmers including fake coal, milk chocolate coins and some Star Wars Jelly Bellies).
Some cute things, like Santa facial tissue, Christmas bandaids, my daughter’s favorite peppermint tea.
Things too small to wrap. Earbuds, Lego eraser, cell phone charger.
The kids also get a new ornament each year. We either put it in the stocking or on the tree. Each one is something about ‘them’ in some way. We write the year and their name on the bottom of each one.
I try to get everything balanced between the kids. Not 100% identical, but still similar. I make two piles, one for each kid and then stuff the stockings. Including putting an orange in the toe.
Stockings are stuffed and ready to do. I hide in my room to make them, so the kids don’t see me. Then I hide the stockings in my room. I put them out on Christmas eve, after they are are sleeping. On Christmas morning the kids are allowed to wake up and grab their stockings. Even if it is super early in the morning. They can do this together. They have to wait for me to wake up to open presents. We also have matching pajamas to wear Christmas morning. That way all our Christmas photos are adorable.
Some of the others I’ve heard of:
Shoes out by the fireplace to have treats in them.
Being good or Klampus will show up.
Chinese food on Christmas Eve.
Making sure the orange was a mandarin orange.
