Kids Keeping You Awake? How To Get A Good Night’s Sleep
Every parent suffers at some point in time with the issue of being kept awake by their children. Heck, at this point, it’s practically a given that you won’t be getting any sleep if you decide to have kids! However, that shouldn’t be the case. We all need sleep in order to function correctly, so it isn’t an option to simply ditch it! There are ways and means to get a good night’s sleep, as we’re about to mention.
Limit Their Sugar Intake Before Bed
A lot of considerations need to be made when bedtime is approaching for your children. If you’re going to stuff them full of sugar hours before they sleep, do you really expect them to settle off? Of course they won’t! You’ve got to be extra careful about when they’re allowed sugary treats like soda and candy. Not only will this be beneficial for their sleeping pattern, but it’ll also help to keep their health in check. If they’re still failing to settle off to sleep after this, there are other potential issues you’ll have to deal with.
Give Them A Regular Sleep Schedule
The problem with allowing your children to sleep whenever they want is that their schedule disappears. I’m not saying you should force children to stay awake if they simply can’t, but try and create some sort of a pattern for them. If they take a short nap in the middle of the day, you can bet they’ll be bursting with energy by the evening. It’s better to try and keep them awake and busy until their scheduled bedtime.
Take Naps Wherever Possible
You’ve probably figured out by now that any time that you get to sleep is precious. This tip won’t necessarily help you get a good night’s sleep, but it’ll help you get some kind of sleep! Whenever you find a chance to get some much-needed rest, take it. If a friend comes round to visit, ask if they mind looking after the child while you get 30 minutes of sleep. If your partner is willing to play with them for an hour, use that hour wisely to recharge your batteries. If you don’t, you’re missing out on a great opportunity.
Invest In A Good Bed
I don’t know about you, but one of the things I’ve always struggled with is getting off to sleep instantly. However, when you’ve got children, if you don’t get off to sleep instantly, you probably won’t at all. You’ve got to find ways to encourage your body to settle off and rest. There are lots of ways to do this, and we’ll explore some more of them later. However, it all starts with the bed you’re lying on. You need a good bed; something that provides high levels of comfort. Go online, and don’t be hesitant to spend money on something that’ll help you significantly. If something like a Saatva mattress review isn’t enough to persuade you, look at other reviews to make sure you’re buying quality.

Especially with newborn babies, there’s a requirement to look after them throughout the early hours. You’re not going to get a good night’s sleep in this case, no matter what you do! Instead, you need to look at alternative options. Many couples use this as an opportunity to share the responsibility on a nightly basis. On Monday, you take the responsibility of getting up and attending to them when necessary. On Tuesday, you can get some much-needed rest after the hectic night before. It isn’t a great solution, but it’s a lot better than staying awake every night.
Parents Sleep In Separate Rooms To Avoid Disturbances
Following on from that last point, it’s a good idea for parents to sleep in separate rooms when taking turns. You don’t have to do this all the time — you’re a couple after all, but it’s very beneficial for sleep purposes. Even though you might not have the responsibility, children cry at a very loud volume. If you’re both in the same room, you’re both going to wake up regardless of who takes care of it. You’re not going to get that sleep you need, so move to a quieter room where you won’t be disturbed. It might seem unfair, but it’s best for everyone in the long run.
Go To Bed When They Do
It’s a common thing for younger children to wake up multiple times during the night. You haven’t got a whole lot of time when your child goes to bed before they’re going to wake up again. However, when you initially settle them off to sleep, they’ll normally stay that way for a few hours. This is the perfect chance to get some much-needed sleep. That’s going to be difficult for you because children often go to bed a lot earlier than adults do. Many see this as an opportunity to get work done, or finally, get some time to themselves. If you can ditch that routine to get some sleep instead, you’ll benefit.
Don’t Allow Your Child To Fear Separation
This is only a small point I want to make, but an important one all the same. Some children wake up at all hours of the night because they don’t want to be on their own. This is sometimes a result of over-coddling. As much as you want to be there for your child, don’t make them fear separation. It isn’t healthy for them, and it won’t help anyone in the household to get the sleep they need.
Meditate Before Bed
I’m going to draw from experience with this final point. We’ve already mentioned how difficult it can be to settle off to sleep. Meditation is a fantastic way of silencing those stresses and negative thoughts that plague our minds at night. You can learn about meditation in all sorts of ways, including through YouTube videos and mobile meditation apps. Once you’ve got to grips with it, you should notice a big difference. It won’t work for everyone, but it has also changed many people’s lives. It’s worth a try!
