7 Ways To Reduce Your Carbon Footprint
I know there are those (crazy) people out there that think we don’t have environmental issues. Global warming is a hoax. We don’t have to worry about recycling. The earth is flat.. you know, ‘those type’ of people. For everyone else, here are seven great ways to reduce your carbon footprint. These are easy. Won’t break the bank. You can do them at home. Teach them to your children. Yes, the earth is fragile and we need to be taking care of it. Check out my ideas. I’m always welcome to new ideas too. Don’t know what a carbon footprint is? - Use Less! Recycle your printer ink cartridges or get them refilled (Costco seems to do the best job refilling them). Read the newspaper online. Especially the Sunday paper that is full of ads. Buy refills instead of a whole bottle! When you use cleaners and then toss the bottle, even if it is in the recycle can, you are still creating waste. These awesome cleaners from DNA Miracles just need to be bought once. After that you can buy tiny pouches that dissolve in water. When the bottle is empty just add a new pouch, fill with water and shake. You have a whole new bottle of cleaner.
2. Reduce the amount of meat you eat. No, not kidding. I love meat and digging into a tri tip salad is a favorite meal for me. But eating meat means growing and feeding them, and growing the grains they need, etc. This uses up a lot of water. Research it. It’s true. Try at least twice a week. Search online for ‘Meatless Monday’ recipes. Try to do one other night. It’ll make a difference plus you’ll save money.

3. Get a Compost Bin. Put table scraps, coffee grounds, tree trimmings and more in it. You’ll be reducing the amount of waste going to the landfill and have rich, nutritious soil for your garden.
4. Make sure your house is sealed and insulated. You don’t want the heater or A/C leaking out cracks or gaps in the doors and windows. Reduce crafts. Close vents in unused rooms. Insulate your walls. If you are somewhere like California or Texas it is a good idea to get an attic fan. Mine turns on automatically and it is a great way to cool off the house without running the A/C as much. Installing ceiling fans helps too.

5. Plant more trees. Have house plants. Grow a garden (also great way to have fresh produce). Have less grass. I have five fruit trees now in my yard (yes, they use a lot of water) plus three vegetable plots and all the small planters have things like mint, tomato plants, onions, etc. growing in them. Plants also provide shade for your house, keeping it cooler in the summer and blocking harsh winds. And let’s not forget the benefits of having more trees and plants for the environment! 6. Find alternatives to driving. Walk, ride, take a city bus, carpool, take a train. When you do errands map them out so that you aren’t backtracking. Also avoid driving during heavy traffic to reduce fuel, Co2 emissions and wear & tear on your car.
7. Unplug! This means things you aren’t using. Your tv in the extra bedroom. The toaster oven. Even your phone charger when you aren’t using it. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, appliances consume a significant amount of electricity even when they are switched off. Even notice how your cell phone charger gets hot when it’s been plugged in a long time? It is using up electricity and it isn’t good for the charger.
