5 Ways to Test For Colorblindness
Is your child colorblind? We thought it was cute when my son was in preschool and said he is green. Better wording, “My mom is white, my dad is black and I’m green.” We all thought it was a phase, it was preschool, right? Make believe, dress-up, pretend time. So, we weren’t concerned. A year or so later we were noticing how he couldn’t tell the difference between a dark blue and a dark purple. Same with certain yellow and tan colors. I know my dad and all of his brothers are colorblind so I had a conversation about it with my dad. My dad didn’t believe me. We logged on his computer and did a search for colorblind tests. There are pictures I see (dotted pictures with a number in them) and if a colorblind person looks they see a different number. Well, my son looked and was back and forth. Sometimes saw both numbers. Our next pediatrician appointment I brought it up and he seemed unconcerned. So I started to do some research. Turns out there are different types of colorblindness. Some people have problems with certain shades, others are ‘red-green colorblind’ and some actually only see black and white. There are lots of degrees in between all of those too. Learning colors, even if you can’t see the difference, is important. Picking out clothes, buying flowers, seeing traffic lights, etc. Here are some things I’ve learned on the internet and from other sources to help you tell if you have a child that is colorblind.
How To Know If Your Son Is Colorblind
I say ‘son’ because almost all colorblind people are male. There are rare exceptions to this rule.
Some symptoms to look out for.
- If you have a child that uses colors wrong, especially dark colors. Like thinks leaves on a tree are purple.
- Grabs the wrong color crayon when asked to get one. especially with red and green and their complementary colors (purple and brown).
- If you have low levels of light colors seem to be the same hue.
- I remember my dad buying ‘red white and blue’ flowers to plant for the 4th of July. He planted them and showed them to us. What he really bought was ‘pink, white and purple.’
Ways To Test For Colorblindness
- Offer different colors of objects (beads, color pencils, socks, sippy cups) and ask you child to separate them into groups or colors.
- Test again with sheets of paper or an expansion crayon or marker pack. Have your child separate colors by hues, especially if there are similar shades.
- Take the paper and your child to an area with good natural light and make a game up which involves asking your child to identify all of the colours on the sheet. Do not show them each colour individually, they must be able to see all of the colours at the same time.
- Go online and search for color blind tests. There are a lot of free ones. I like this color blind test since it is simple and shows big pictures. You can search the internet and find more too.
- Ask your pediatrician to do a color blind test.
What You Can Do About It
While there is no cure for colorblindness knowing it is there is important. There are positive aspect too. Most likely your child has excellent night vision and excellent sense of smell. They might see things hidden in camouflage or shadows better too.
You can help your child distinguish between red and green. Like the positions of traffic lights (red, yellow, green, in that order).
Newer technology has created colorblind glasses. Available from O2Amo. They enhance colors and make it where colorblind people can see colors better. They are not a miracle cure and do not work for everyone but I tried them out on my dad and son. For my dad he loves them. He notices a huge difference and they help him when reading, picking out socks, especially ones of dark shades, gardening and more. My son’s colorblindness is more mild. When he takes the colorblindness tests he sees both the colorblind answers and the non-colorblind answers. He said everything is more vibrant and pink but he doesn’t see colors better.
These colorblind glasses are available on Amazon too.
