Being a single mom means I don’t have money for extra things, especially when they could be prevented. I’d rather spend money on my kids than on household repairs. Especially when simple steps could have prevented the repairs. Check out these easy steps for protecting your pipes this winter.
1- Don’t put foods down the drains that will clog them. This means certain foods shouldn’t be down the garbage disposal side too; grease and oil, rice (since it can expand), celery, egg shells, lettuce, fruit pits, potato peels. Plumbers might have more to the list. For me, since our house is 60+ years old and has the original pipes, we don’t put any food at all down the drain.
2- Clean the pipes by pouring vinegar and baking soda down them. They will bubble and expand, hopefully eating away in sections where the pipes are narrowed from food.
3- Flush out the pipes. I had a friend do this a few years ago. He put a high-pressure house in my large drain on the side of my house. All sorts of gross blackened water came out. We also have to do this so the washing machine doesn’t overflow when it drains. Newer washing machines drain faster and can backup, causing flooding.
4- Check the bathrooms too! Extra guests mean toilets, sinks and showers are being used more often. Kids are known for using too much toilet paper, often clogging the toilets. Some people think it is okay to flush tampons and ‘flushable baby wipes’. Guess what… they clog the toilets and aren’t really meant to be flushed. Guests might not know to use a hair trap in the shower.
5- If you have a drain that is draining slowly get it fixed before guests arrive. The small problem can become tenfold when you double or triple the people using the bathroom. We don’t have to worry about pipes freezing in California. We don’t get that cold here. But I still don’t want other problems. Like all the guests having to share one bathroom if someone put the front one out-of-service.
Fun Fact: Thanksgiving is the #1 Holiday for Plumbers and the day after is their BUSIEST DAY OF THE YEAR!
You have 5,10,20 extra guests in your house? Chances are someone might clog a drain! Not something you have time for, right? Can’t call a plumber on Thanksgiving or Christmas and mostly not on a weekend. My go-to is Liquid Plumber. It unclogs drains quickly without the high cost of an emergency plumber. Best to do maintenance ahead of time and have some Roto-Rooter on hand, just in case.
