Back to school can mean so much to people, in a variety of ways. Kids going back being at school all day long (pros and cons to this), vacations coming to an end, teachers prepping for the new school year and for some, with older kids, kids going off to college for the first time, or back to college. Regardless of where you are in all of this, sales are a must! Back to school can mean a lot of money being spent (and it isn’t Christmas). Backpacks, new clothing, classroom supplies, items for hair, makeup and other accessories. (Click here for older post of 100 backpacks for under $25 each).
Elementary School Ages going back to school can mean a brand new lunchbox and backpack (personally, I love bento boxes). For clothing I love Kohls (this is not an affiliate post- I just love them). I always shop the clearance racks, use Kohl’s Cash and coupons. They’ll let you use more than one coupon if it isn’t identical. Shop in a few trips, that way if you get Kohl’s Cash you can use it on the next trip. Little kids grow so much over the summer that new clothes, especially pants so they aren’t floods, is a must. For those that have been in camps or on vacation all summer, you might want to look into some educational fun for at-home-time too (between taxi-mom, homework, making dinner, etc).
Middle School Kids Supplies
In middle school the supplies needed are different. Not all schools have a list for the students to take home. Basic supplies, backpack, 3-ring binder, lunch bag and pencils, pens, erasers. Depending on the school, and what classes are being taken, the student might need musical instruments, attire for sports, art supplies and individual supplies, like a camera for a photography class. Trending clothing is sometimes hard. What is for sale at Kohls or Target might not be what the cool kids are wearing. Buy basic colors and let them decide a little later, once school has started. Some tried and true that never go out of style are jeans and Converse or Vans shoes. Hoodies are popular too.
If you have a kid that is walking home alone consider putting a tracker in their backpack or shoe. I’ve just recently heard of this, but it is a way to find them and keep an eye on their path. No, they are not fool-proof. Nothing is. But it is an added security.
High School and College Kiddos
Yes, they are still our kids, even as they are growing up. It is definitely harder to shop for this age. Basic supplies are the same, although in college students might want a more sturdy backpack that will fit a laptop and books. A game I played at this age, and is a classic. Something most older people will remember but a younger generation can enjoy is Risk. I remember playing it with the kids in my neighborhood and it would sometimes take us hours or days to finish a game. Lots of strategy and thinking in the game. Plus it is good for down-time away from electronics and textbooks.
If your kids are anywhere in the ‘school age’ category, check the supplies they need. One of my kids is in a dorm and the college gave out a supply list, including longer sheets (dorm twin is not the same as a regular twin size) and basics like a bathroom trashcan, toiletries, towels, reusable grocery bags, a few dishes and Tupperware containers, etc.
