10 Ways To Have Creative Fun With Kids
Sometimes there is free time with the family and it is way too easy to put the tv on. Here are some fun ideas for all ages to do with the family. Educational, creative, hands on fun. Dig in and make the most of these years.
- Get a 3D pen and take turns building all sorts of fun things. Hamilton Buhl 3D pen is on Amazon and additional filament can be purchased. Not sure if there is an actual age limit on this but I saw kids at MakerCon in early elementary school creating all sorts of objects.
2. Go on a scavenger hunt! Make one or search for a printable one online. You can do it in your neighborhood, on a hike or at the mall. Team up youngest and oldest to balance the odds.
3. Make your own trailmix. Get your favorite ingredients and make lunch-sized bags. Most contain nuts, chocolate and dried fruit. Add the ones you like.
4. Play Flashlight Tag outside. The Atomic Beam flashlight is great since it can be worn on the forehead and will point in the direction the wearer looks.
5- Have some STEM fun. Basher Science has books, card games and action figures about biology, chemistry, rocks & minerals. Meant for ages 10-14 but younger and older kids can play and learn too.
6- Build an engine! The Electric Motors Catalyst is a hands on project from Tinkering Labs. This is more STEM fun and the end result is a really cool car. Teacher love these for rainy days and state standards can be printed.
7- Learn to Tie-Dye shirts. This takes sometime but I did it with the kids and we had a blast. The end result was we all had new shirts (I used old white shirts that had some stains on them). The kids made a second shirt and after the dye was dry they cut and sewed the shirt, making a pillow. I bought one-step color by Tulip to make it easier but still pre-washed the shirts and soaked them in vinegar to make the color last. It is cheaper if you make the dye yourself but I didn’t want a huge mess. FYI- we did this in the backyard, on the patio, since the dye did splash some.

9- Color together. Depending on the age kids might want crayons and construction paper or they can color with you in an adult-child coloring book. It is a great way to chat and have some resting time. I love this Let’s Color Together book. It has a child side (easier, less detailed picture) and an adult side. You can color at the same time in one book.
8- Go for a walk. Get some books educational books for your region. You can get books on birds, native plants, native wildlife. Bring a book and some binoculars and go searching together.
