Must-Haves for National School Lunch Week
We just missed National School Lunch Week but that doesn’t mean it won’t happen again next year. Some must-haves for my kids for lunch might be different than kids in public school. My kids are either at home for lunch, at homeschool enrichment classes or on a field trip (or in the car on the way to one). So we need snacks and lunches that are easy to make at home, while still trying to have a variety, and things they can grab and make themselves for when we aren’t home for lunch. This varies on the day of the week so it isn’t always easy to play by the day. I usually have to plan by the week and think further out, so we aren’t stuck being in the car somewhere running around and the kids telling me they are hungry.
The kids mostly are fine with sandwiches in their lunch but love when I mix it up. I’m not great at bento boxes but I try to add a variety and do things like swap sandwich meat for a tortilla and roll up their lunch or use cookie cutters to cut out a heart in the middle of their sandwich.
When we are at home we can make creative lunches like using Gusto’s antipasto artichokes on some rosemary & sea salt bruschette crackers and bruschette spread to create delicious hand-held bruschetta. They love eating them and it is a great alternative to a ham and cheese or PB&J sandwich.
Some things are a must in their lunch. One is a piece of fruit or some carrots or celery. Two is fruit rolls or fruit snacks.
They love Welch’s Fruit Rolls. They are made with real fruit and are very low in calories. They have 100% of the daily vitamin C needed, are peanut free, gluten free and preservative free. They are available in three flavors.
Another healthy snack is Go Organically fruit snacks. They are very tasty and made with real fruit. Go Organically Fruit Snacks are a tasty, on-the-go USDA-certified organic fruit snack made with real fruit. They are GMO Free and contain no preservatives.
If are are making something like hot dogs, fish stick or french fries (my daughter loves to make homemade fries) we love using Chut Up! Beet Ketchup. It tastes just like regular ketchup but is made with beets, vinegar and other natural ingredients. It has only 3 carbs per serving and has no added sugar. Chut Up! also has Peri Peri hot sauce and Apple & Caramelized Onion Chutney.
